Jennifer Sweet is our founder and owner with a heart for the autistic in the community. This is her story...
"When my daughter, Kate, was in 6th grade, she was having panic attacks in the public school system. This was due to the fact that she was academically four years behind her peers. She was completely overwhelmed, and despite the fact the she has a genetic disorder, she was not being provided with adequate accommodations. Her disorder includes autism, seizures and a learning disability.
Once we moved her to Jeremiah School, all her panic attacks and nervousness vanished from day one. She was now in a place that understood her and her disability. Plus, she was allowed to go back to her personal academic level and move at her own pace. She made friends with kids that understood her, because they also had autism. Kate's once cheerful, playful personality came back and she began to love school. Jeremiah School literally gave use our daughter back!
Over our three years at Jeremiah School, we continued to be impressed at the opportunities and activities that they offered, as well as Kate's own personal growth. Once Kate got to high school, Ms. Jo, Jeremiah School's director, told us the hard truths about autism after graduation. There are very few opportunities and most "graduate to the sofa", due to lack of the social skills they need to be hired.
I always knew that we would need to help Kate find a path for the future, but I was struck by how capable the rest of the kids were at Jeremiah School. I wanted to help. Inspired by our gratitude for the wonderful work of Jeremiah School, and the scripture Jeremiah 29:11, "hope and a future", my husband and I decided to continue Jeremiah School's vision to adulthood. We decided on a cafe, since we already knew an amazing chef and friend, Anna Chacon, that was on board to help us. We will help train and coach the students while they are still at Jeremiah School and be a place of employment with coaching and support after they graduate. We hope to be just the start for most! Jeremiah Cafe is where hope meets opportunity. Thank you for helping us to obtain our mission by supporting us!"
